Almaty is one of the greenest cities. There is a tradition to plant different trees along the streets and avenues, because of it Almaty is called a "garden town". Greenery plays an extremely important role in the life of the city. It doesn't only adorn its streets and avenues but also has a wholesome effect on its climate.
Almaty lies at the foot of the majestic snow-capped peaks of the Zailiysky Alatau mountain range, which surrounds the city from the southern and eastern sides. The inhabitants of Almaty are very fond of their mountains. But mountains are not always affable. In hot summer days a formidable muddy-stone avalanche or torrent is possible. That is why high detention dam was created in the most dangerous Minor Almaty gorge. Also Almaty is situated in the seism-dangerous zone. Because of these reasons citizens of Almaty were called "the million of brave people".
